Hee iedereen,

Het is onderhand al vier maanden geleden sinds ik terug ben gekomen van mijn avontuur. Mis ik het? JA! Wil ik het overnieuw doen? JA! "Ben je al weer gewend?", ik zal je zeggen: Je went nooit. Ik heb nog steeds moeite met bepaalde zinnen en vaak word ik echt raar aangekeken als ik niet uit mijn woorden kom. In de ochtend ben ik vaak nog steeds verrast dat ik nooit meer een hert voorbij zie rennen, aangezien ze hier in Nederland gewoon lekker over een ecoduct heen hobbelen. Een groot glas water met ijs mis ik nog steeds elke avond bij het avondeten, alhoewel de kleine bekertjes langzaamaan beginnen te wennen. Anyways: Dat is niet waarom ik dit bericht typ. Als mensen mij, buiten alle andere vragen, vragen of ik dit aan anderen aan zou raden, zeg ik vol enthousiasme: JA! Dit is letterlijk iets wat je maar een keer in je leven kan doen, dus laat de kans niet voorbij gaan! Er zijn veel mensen die twijfelen bij het aangaan van een avontuur zoals dit en dat is begrijpelijk. Zoals mijn favoriete quote gaat: "if dreams don't scare you, they aren't big enough"

Eind november zal ik meehelpen op een van de informatie-avonden in Eindhoven! Tijdens deze informatie avond zullen ze alle algemene informatie vertellen voor het volgen van een jaar high school in Amerika en natuurlijk zal ik mijn ervaring met jullie delen. Aan het einde van het jaar werd aan mij verteld om iets te schrijven over het afgelopen jaar en Arkansas. Ik heb dit niet met jullie gedeeld toendertijd en het leek mij wel leuk om dat nu wel te doen! :

"You're placed in Ark-an-saw!!". I'm Emily Arnold and as a Dutch girl that did not know all the 50 states yet, I had no clue what my organization was talking about. "I'm placed in what???". I responded back. "You're placed in Ark-an-saw!!" She repeated. Arkansas. The state I always thought you pronounced as Arkansas and not as Arkansaw, the state I thought was more country than Texas and further than that really unknown by half of the people including myself. If I'm being honest, I wasn't really thrilled to go to this place named Greenland, Arkansas. "A place that's even smaller than my own hometown, how is that going to work out!??" - was my thought. But, as an exchange student you have to be more open-minded than the most open-minded person on earth. My organization tells you not to expect to be placed in California or Florida, the most requested states, but deep inside you still hope for a spot in either one of those beautiful states. Don't deny it, but there are some states you have no clue about what to expect and what to think. And that's exactly what I had with Arkansas! Little disappointed, because I didn't get placed in one of my requested states, I contacted other exchange students from Arkansas and looked up on Google what Arkansas has in store for me. Ofcourse, everyones experience will always be different from yours, and a website about Arkansas will always try to make Arkansas look like the best state of the US. I have to admit, it looked beautiful on Google, but what I learned is that half of the people owns a four wheeler and that hunting is really popular. Well....

So I promised myself I would just 'wing' it and accept it. Besides, I was more than happy to have an awesome host family that I already liked so much, and that's more important than the state I am in. So the time flew by and the moment was finally there. I saw Arkansas for the first time! "that's....green." It immediately made sense why it was called The Natural State.

Now 10 months later, when I'm about to leave, I can say full honesty that Arkansas had a lot in store for me. I'm more than happy that I got to be placed in this state and that I got to know everything about Arkansas. Calling the Hogs, going on a beautiful hike on the Whitaker Point Trail, camping at the Dam and kayaking in Beaver lake, walking through the streets in Little Rock, sitting in the schoolbus and looking at the beauty from Arkansas and sitting in the back of a truck to watch the sunset at the Cross in Fayetteville. Not forget to mention that even Greenland had his beautiful sides that I will never forget. Arkansas will always have a little spot in my heart.
